So, I picked up a pair of these in blue canvas and olive leather after finding how much I enjoyed wearing some retro hi-top PF Flyers I recently rediscovered. I was looking for something offering a bit more ankle support and loose soil traction, but having more the weight, feel and price of a sneaker, rather than a lug-soled leather boot. I live in Houston's sub-tropical and often quite wet climate, and I wanted something to get me the traction and ankle support I need but ideally with the convenience of a sneaker to put on and take off. These Grounder II deliver just what I wanted and needed even better than I had hoped.

The outsole is wrapped quite high up the upper to protect from scuffs and mud, but their saw-toothed pattern grips muddy, sandy, and wet, gravely surfaces better even than some of my heavy boots do. But they weigh maybe 1/3rd as much at most and they lace on in seconds rather than minutes. They also keep your foot quite cool, even while working outside in heat, thanks to the large vents on the sides. So when I needed to run my chainsaw to chop up some huge downed limbs in wet, loose grassy soils and Houston's 100% humidity sunny December mid-day heat, I didn't need a change of socks when I finished. I just stamped my feet in the grass, slid them sideways a bit, and off came the little clay I picked-up and I didn't need to go inside to change shoes before taking the family to a casual dinner out.

The older I get, the less I want to stoop to tie laces. So I'm loving that I can wear these sneaker/boots all day for different activities, even doing workout sessions in the gym, and that I never have to worry about needing to change my footwear. They're very light, very comfortable, offer great stable footing, can be laced tight for extra ankle support, they're cool for your feet, and they look nice for almost any casual activity, with suede leather styles that dress-up quite well. If I have several activities planned for the day, I reach for these 1st, choosing leather boots only when there's significant deep mud or water to navigate.
