Product Description

The Kinetic inRide is our next generation watt meter. The system uses the new Bluetooth Smart communication protocol found in the iPhone 4S and iPad 3 to pair a heart rate monitor and power sensor pod with the new Kinetic inRide iPhone App to measure wattage with any Kinetic fluid trainer. HOW IT WORKS Our incredibly accurate fluid trainer power curve allows precise wattage readings at exact speeds as measured indoors on a Kinetic fluid trainer. Firmware in the inRide Sensor Pod measures speed and cadence at the tire and translates that to wattage with a simple equation. That data and the heart rate data is collected and displayed on the paired iPhone. Post workout file sharing allows you to upload training data to your favorite web site or email files to a remote coach. All current Kinetic fluid trainers including: the Road Machine, Rock And Roll and Pro Trainer are compatible with Kinetic inRide allowing the rider to capitalize on the benefits of a wattage-based training program.

I'm use to using "Virtual Power" via TrainerRoad and was excited to have a more accurate determination of this virtual power through using the Kurt Kinetic InRide.

1st Ride - Worked well for speed/power calculations... however I noticed the cadence determination was all over the place! 83 jumping to 141, back to 105 then repeating. The cadence calculation is just that a calculation so it's not going to be as consistent as a direct cadence sensor.

2nd Ride - Read the DC Rain Maker blog about the Kinetic InRide ([...]) and calibrated the sensor (20mph -> 10mph) both at the start of the ride and at the 10-min mark. The power calculation was better... but still had the cadence issue.

3rd Ride - Power Fail! Despite being type-A and obsessing that I had the product properly installed. My speed went from 19mph down 0mph and alternating back and forth. This likely meant that the magnet was triggering the sensor every other rotation or something... I had "excellent" signal strength for the bluetooth connection.

After 3 rides, I decided that the Kinetic InRide was not worth it! This defective unit is being returned...
