For the money, you simply cannot do better than this if you need a basic weight set.

The plates are solid and will endure years of abuse. It doesn't skimp when it comes to the bars either; these are solid steel, and will not bend under normal (i.e., somewhere around 250 pounds of weight) use. I have used hollow bars in the past, and I have bent them with much less weight.

You can save money and buy one of the vinyl and concrete sets for ca. $60, but you'll regret it soon after. Seriously, read the reviews of those. Simply put, this set rocks. If you need more weight, supplement it with a few 25 or 10 pound plates, which you can pick up from a certain ***mart's website inexpensively, and with free shipping.

Here's a breakdown of what you receive:
4 x 2.5 pound plates = 10 pounds
4 x 5 pound plates = 20 pounds
6 x 10 pound plates = 60 pounds
2 x 5 pound dumbbell handles with star fasteners (with rubber inserts to ensure that the plates don't come loose) = 10 pounds
1 x 10 pound barbell with star fasteners (same inserts) = 10 pounds.

The maximum weight that you can fit on a single dumbbell handle is 65 pounds (6x10 and 2x2.5), for a total of 70 pounds. If you were so inclined, some 25 pound plates could seriously increase this (6x25 and 2x2.5), totaling at 160 pounds (!).

The boxes arrived rather damaged, which is to be expected when items this heavy are shipped across the country in cardboard. You will receive three packages: one which contains all six 10 pound plates, another with the dumbbell handles and the remaining plates, and the third, which is simply the barbell handle.

I would buy this set again in a second. It's an excellent set for beginners and experienced athletes with limited space/funds. There are no moving parts to break, as there are in the various versions of adjustable dumbbells out there, and these are a fraction of the cost. Keep in mind that if you're concerned with your weights getting scratched or the paint coming off, chances are you aren't buying these to actually use them.
