These handmade meditation benches are perfect for taking the pressure off your ankles while sitting zazen (kneeling) during meditation. Aging knees and ankles are so common among martial arts practitioners (and the position is so rarely used by "Westerners") that many of us simply can't use the traditional position for any length of time (if at all). These benches take all the pressure off the ankles and vastly ease the pressure on the knees.

The first time you use one a HUGE smile will creep over your face as you realize how much more comfortable it is than a pillow or even a non-padded bench.

These are created one at a time by Ananda Woodworking of out of their shop in California. We love these benches since they are clearly made with a great deal of attention to their finish and detail - plus the padding holds up to lots of use. While these are "technically" the TALL version of the bench, we know people from 5' to 6'2" have found them perfectly comfortable. Most people find the tall a bit more comfortable simply because your knees don't have to bend quite as much.

The tops have a layer of foam covered with cotton batting and topped by cotton fabric. Of course you can get meditation benches with a wood top, but these are so much more comfortable.

A nice heavy hinge on both legs lets them fold flat - perfect for travel or just stowing out of the way. They are a little stiff on purpose so they won't flop open (or closed) and they don't make any noise if you shift during a group class session.

We usually have at least a couple different colors in stock. If you're buying for someone else, "black" or "natural" is usually pretty safe. The "in-store favorite" is Burgundy - almost a "plum" color. Very nice if we have them in stock.

As far as the bench is concerned, it seems to be of fine quality. If you get the correct size, I'm sure it will work fine. However, one of the sellers is not sending the advertised size.

The Amazon listing states:

'While these are "technically" the TALL version of the bench, we know people from 5' to 6'2" have found them perfectly comfortable. Most people find the tall a bit more comfortable simply because your knees don't have to bend quite as much. '

and

'Our SUPER return policy allows you to return it with NO RESTOCKING fees - even if you used it (but the only reason that would happen is if you quit doing sitting... we've had exactly ONE come back - ever!'

Yet, BodyMindWisdom sent a five inch tall bench only comfortable for some under 5'10". I'm 6'2". There was some difficulty contacting the seller as he wanted to handle by phone at first. There was much phone tag involved. When finally reached, the only solution given would cost more than $25 plus labor to exchange the legs for the advertised ones. He will admit that the item received did not match the listing, but with no apologies or concern about correcting the mistake. He'll simply state 'We only supply standard height legs with our bench... '

When I asked to return the bench, he writes:

'In general, please note that only approved products, shipped back to us at your expense, and received by us in excellent, unused condition will be refunded. While BodyMindWisdom does not itemize the handling and shipping price of our products sold on Amazon.com, the actual handling and shipping costs associated with your original order will be deducted from refunds.

Credits/refunds are processed and issued within 3 weeks after product receipt by BodyMindWisdom. As a result, and due to possible additional time until you received your statement, the full process could take typically take as long as a full month or more until your credit/refund is visible on your statement."'

When I left negative feedback, he contacted me during lunch and kept talking when I told him my food was getting cold. He dropped an "F bomb" while trashing Amazon. Although he admitted the item received did not match the listing, he showed no concern for correcting the problem nor would he budge on the options to resolve the problem. He ended the conversation by stating that we could not talk again until I removed the negative feedback on Amazon.

The irony is that my most stressful and worst transaction on Amazon was over a meditation bench :^)
