Garmin Chirp Geocaching Wireless Beacon Review

I got one of these to play around with when it was first available. It's an interesting little device. It won't change the game of geocaching radically, but it does add to it. The main thing holding it back will be the cost.

It is a little transmitter, good for up to 30 feet or so. It broadcasts a beacon continuously at low power. If a compatible unit detects this beacon, it will send out a request to it, and it will then dump out its data. This consists of its name (9 characters), description (50 characters) and coordinates. It also sends out information such as number of visitors (it does not count unique visitors - if a unit requests data twice, it is counted twice) and low battery alert.

The battery compartment is not easy to open. Removing the battery is also difficult - I found that using a strong magnet is the easiest way of getting it out. Garmin claims the battery should last for a year.

The typical use for this will be one of the stages of a multistage cache. A geocacher will go to a location where the chirp is located. From there, they will receive instructions from it to go to the next location, without having to search out a container with a slip of paper pointing them to the next stage.

Some people are also using it as a travel bug for their car, in addition to a window decal. That way people can "discover" their vehicle travel bug wirelessly.

For security, the device can only be re-programmed by the same GPS that programmed it, or with the serial number of the unit. So write down the serial number of your GPSr just in case you lose or damage it.

The device comes with a little piece of self adhesive velcro for attaching to a surface. Any other attachment method needs to be improvised by the owner.

There are several limitations to the device. While you can save the name and coordinates by pressing "Go" after receiving the information, it will not save the description. If two chirps are close to each other, the behavior seems to be that only one of them will be active. This behavior could change with firmware updates.

Note that only some Garmin models are compatible. The lowest end models of the Oregon, Dakota, and GPSMap 62/78 does not have the hardware to support chirp. It appears unlikely that Colorado support will be added. There's currently some work by other equipment manufacturer to support this. iPhone and Android support might be available some day.

The Kettlebell Way To Your Perfect Body Volume 1 DVD Review

I have recently completed P90X so I was already in good shape and I was looking for a way to keep fit that would not require as much of a time committment. After seeing all the news about how kettlebells develop functional fitness and combine cardio and strength training I was skeptical but decided to order this DVD. I have now been using it for over 1 month and its an amazing workout. Kettlebells are not cheap (an neither is this DVD) but its an investment that pays great dividends.

The moves are a little tricky initially, you should review the tutorial before starting this workout. A Kettlebell really makes you activate a lot of different muscles to stabilize it so its best to start off with a light weight or even a light dumbell until you get the movement patterns down. It also takes a few times through the workout until you know which weight is right for you. I bought 2 kettlebells; 25 lbs and 35 lbs and that is all I need for now.

I do this workout with a heart rate monitor and it burns over 700 calories in 45 minutes (at least for me). Do this workout 3 times a week and you will be in great shape!

1. Plates are nice, but if you are looking for a pretty set, you may not be content. Plates have larger casting defects than most I have seen. No biggy for most but if you are considering a fancy chrome or rubber coated set, you may not be content.
2. The plate coating is very nice.
3. The plates have just enough of a single sided lip on them for handling, but are not as easy to handle as plates with hand holds, double lips, or both. This shouldn't be a problem unless you are particular.
4. The chrome plated bar is very nice. The portion that the plates fit over is even ribbed to help prevent the weights from sliding off. I think this is nicer than the bars at the gym that I go to.

Pros
These shoes are the lightest and most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever owned. The rubber material on the bottom of the shoe do an excellent job of cushioning your feet from walking or running of pavement. I wore these shoes to Disney world and averaged about 8+ miles a day walking and the end of my two week trip my feet and ankles didn't hurt at all. Due to the softness of the material on the bottom of the shoe I was worried they would wear out fast, but they haven't shown any excessive wear in the three months of wearing them.

Cons
Rocks and twigs get stuck in between the gaps of the bottom of the shoe which can be annoying.

Sizing
The sizing of these shoes are true to size and I found them to be the same as all my other Nike shoes.
