Sky Caddie Golf Certified Pre-Owned SG4 GPS Review
Have used the SkyCaddie SG4 since 2008. We bought it on sale and probably should have spent a few more bucks and gotten the SG5. This was my first GPS after 40 years of old school golf. I was happy with the product until the last couple of rounds. It just couldn't keep the signal and the yardages were all over the place rendering it useless. I was playing familiar courses, so I just needed distance from the fairway to the green. I had at least two bogies due to poor yardages. I know. I know! I should have double checked with other markers on the course, but I had become dependent on my SkyCaddie. I really liked it when I was off the planet left or right and could get distances where there were no markers available. One the SkyCaddie distances yesterday showed 157 and it was closer to 127. I hit my 7-iron and was 30 yards over the green. Very disappointed. Also could not get it to skip the scoring feature which I find annoying. The unit takes up to 15 minutes to boot up so I turn it on first thing on reaching the course. Half the time I need to reboot the unit to get it to work. My hope is the thing will be working by the time I reach the first tee.Overall I was pleased with the unit and had played more than 100 rounds with it. I was happy to be on the fairway about 150 out and get a reading to front middle and back edge to within +/-3 yards. For a mid handicapper, is it really necessary to get to +/- 1 yard?
The annual fee is really annoying. I live in Portland,OR area on Washington border. To get WA courses, I have to pay a higher fee for more than one state. The attachment in the rear to recharge takes some dexterity and I don't understand that product design. The SG4 is old technology, but distances to the edge of hazards and the carry distance was really helpful. Based upon the reviews I have read on the new SGX and SGX-W models, I think I am going with the Garmin unit. We have a Garmin GPS portable for our car and we are really happy with it. I had planned to use the product for another 5 years, but it is cheaper to get a new unit. I do understand technology is obsolete quickly, but I don't have to like it and it's not worth my time to call customer service and their reviews make the IRS customer service look stellar.
